2. Milford, DE Middle School received notice last month that they were selected as a Super Star School for the state of Delaware. Six awards are given each year that are sponsored by the Delaware Chamber of Commerce. Read a short history in the right-hand column. Below are two attached photos of their "Scatterbrain" created by teachers Heather Evans and Jen Hallman. It is a skull filled with painted lima beans. Each lima bean has a numeral painted on it. When it is time to select random items, a student removes the top of the skull and picks out a bean. Click to see photos.

3. Rhonda Johnston teaches high school science in Lloydminster, Alberta. Her powerpoint for LtoJ questions is available by e-mailing me at Lee@LtoJConsulting.com. The file is too large to post to this newsletter. However, the first 20 slides are attached below for readers to observe what she has created. When it is time for the LtoJ quiz, a student randomly draws from a cup of popsicle sticks. Each stick has an element written on it. The student then clicks on the symbol for the element on the smart board periodic table. Powerpoint hyperlinks then direct the class to the question on the screen. What a great way to constantly place content in front of students in order to embed learning in their long-term memory!

4. Also from Lloydminster is a high school picture from a French class. It is a record of English spoken in the classroom. The teachers have "clickers" for counting. Each time the teachers hear English spoken, they click, and then record the total at the end of the period.

5. Educators from Iredell-Statesville School District in North Carolina will be presented the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award by President Obama this spring. Attached is a Power Point slide of a bulletin board from one of their schools. It shows a complete implementation of LtoJ with clear expectations, class run chart, scatter diagram and histogram. Also included in the slide is a student run chart.

6. Teachers in Fulton County, Georgia are using the document camera for their LtoJ Quizzes. They have cut apart mathematics questions and then randomly select the questions to place under the document camera. Answers are written by students on small white boards. See attached Power Point slide.

7. Jeff Burgard has finished writing the second edition of Continuous Improvement in the Science Classroom. It is in production and will be available very soon. Four other books in the "Continuous Improvement" series are in the updating process. The books will be available from Quality Press, http://www.asq.org/

8. I have attached a Power Point collection from a Toyota staff development book. Feel free to use various quotes in your work.

Delaware Award:

Principal Dr. Nicole Durkin first began implementation of L to J in the fall of 2006 at Milford Middle School.  Since that time, Delaware State Testing scores have increased steadily in writing, reading and math.

"I feel that using the weekly surveys in all content areas has helped our increase in test scores tremendously," Durkin said. "My gut instinct is that the program is probably the one thing that has contributed the most to the success of our kids and increased our students' learning."

Students are now taking ownership in their learning and can articulate quickly the purpose and benefits associated with the weekly surveys.

One student said, "I like taking Essential Knowledge (EK) quizzes because I can tell if I learned things from last time. If I did get something correct, I feel really great." This approach gets the student more involved in taking responsibility and ownership of their learning. In addition, teachers no longer have to wait for monthly or quarterly unit tests to see if the class is learning and understanding a topic. They are able to adjust their lessons on a weekly basis based on the results of these surveys.
