February 2011

1. On a recent visit to Columbus, NE I was able to see many excellent implementations of LtoJ in elementary, middle and high school. Rather than explain all of the details in the newsletter, I have attached notes to a slide presentation. Download the powerpoint and then instead of viewing in slide show format, view in the notes format. I've written comments for each photo.

2. Attached is a powerpoint presentation showing some "gateways" for science LtoJ quizzes from Lexington, NE. The quizzes are all organized on power point. When a teacher displays the appropriate "gateway" on the screen, the students see three miniature power point presentations. The first is a presentation with questions from the current grade level. At the bottom of the slide are the links to the questions from prior grade levels.

The elementary "gateway" is from third grade, but teachers also ask each week some questions from grades two and one. The high school "gateway" is from physics. The teachers also have links to the LtoJ quizzes from chemistry and biology. The "gateway" is not the actual quiz powerpoint; it is links to the three different power point quizzes.

3. Attached is a draft article about the homework process I learned from John McDonald in Rochester, MN. I share the process in all LtoJ seminars. If you have implemented this process and have stories to share regarding your experience, please send to me at Lee@LtoJConsulting.com.

4. Here is the URL for a video prepared by a Phoenix school. You will enjoy the humor and enthusiasm.

5. The URL below is another video used as an All-Time-Best celebration by Carson Norine of Blair, NE. The dancer at her school was the principal, but the one sent to me was of me as the dancer. Enjoy.

6. Attached is an article about research on studying. The focus of the research is retention. Although the research is not about the LtoJ process, there are obvious connections.

All-Time-Best

It was ten years ago that Heather Sparks, Oklahoma City teacher, shared with me her addition to the class run chart. It was a mere star placed on the chart every time the class scored higher than ever before. She called this All-Time-Best or ATB.
Since that time , in many, many schools ATB has become a more commonly used term than even IEP. All students "get it," even in kindergarten. They know when all the scores added up are higher than ever before.
Humans like to know if they are being successful AND want to know if they are a part of a successful team.
If you have a favorite ATB story you'd like to share with Heather, her e-mail is hisparks@aol.com.

(She was named Oklahoma teacher of the year in 2009!)
